Account Permissions

Projects can be public or private. Private projects are only accessible and viewable by members of the projects. With Jill’s approval, Lily can grant project membership.

Role based permissions:

• Visitors – Can see all public projects.
• Regular members – Can see public and private projects that you are a member of, but has no editing privileges.
• Editors – Can change data: adding annotations, binning, editing existing bins, editing project/bin attributes, etc.

There is a published attributes on projects. Only public and published projects are visible on the home page. However, public projects that are not published are accessible to people who have a direct link, but they will not be displayed on the home page. We need this permission setting for the interim period when a paper is in review, so that reviewers can review the projects while the public cannot see them yet.

Users on ggKbase are granted different levels of permissions and access depending on the roles and tasks that they need to perform in the system.

Some of the important reasons for implementing authorization are

1. to enforce data security;
2. to prevent mishandle of the data by accident, such as unintentional deletion of genomic data; and
3. to keep scientific data private and protected until it is published to scientific journals.
